Equipping Digital Missionaries: Breaking the Rules to Share the Gospel Online

Jeff Reed • January 28, 2025

Are you ready to break the traditional mold and join a digital revolution for Jesus?

The world is shifting, and ministry has to shift with it. And theChurch.digital isn’t about playing it safe. It’s about stepping boldly into digital spaces to proclaim the truth of Jesus. If you’ve felt the call to disrupt the status quo and take the Gospel to the digital frontier, we’ll show you how. This is your guide to becoming a digital missionary on a mission to change the world.

theChurch.digital: sending rebels into the digital mission field

A digital missionary-sending agency? Sounds crazy, right? Good—it should. theChurch.digital exists to shake things up. Forget what you think you know about how missions are "supposed" to work. This is about empowering people like you to share the Gospel in the wild, untamed world of digital spaces. But does the Holy Spirit even work online? Absolutely! He’s moving online in ways that defy convention and tradition.

Billy Graham nailed it when he said, "It's the Holy Spirit's job to convict, God's job to judge, and my job to love." That’s the heartbeat of digital missions. Pray for the mission field, trust the Spirit to do His thing, and love people unapologetically, wherever they are—yes, especially in the internet's darkest corners.

The new mission field

Let’s get one thing straight: digital missionaries aren’t your run-of-the-mill churchgoers. They’re outliers, misfits, and rebels willing to go where others won’t. The digital mission field is full of people who’ve been burned by church or who’ve never set foot in one. Atheists, agnostics, and the de-churched—they’re not coming to us, so we go to them.

As Luke 10:2 lays it out: "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." The digital harvest is ripe, calling for people like you who are ready to break out of the box and make a real impact. This isn’t about fitting in. It’s about standing out, meeting people where they are, and showing Christ’s love in unexpected ways.

Platforms as the new frontiers

Forget the old idea of "mission fields." Let’s talk about platforms as places. Twitch, Facebook, VR and video games are the new frontiers, the Wild West of digital ministry. Each has its own culture, rules, and challenges. If you want to make a difference, you have to understand the terrain.

theChurch.digital calls this idea "Platforms as Places." It’s about respecting the unique culture of each digital space. What works on Twitch doesn’t fly on Facebook, and VR is a different animal. The key is to adapt, learn the rules, and then break them when the moment is right to bring people closer to Jesus.

Stop debating, start disrupting

Some people will say digital missions aren’t real. Let them talk. We’re not here to argue or justify ourselves. The battlefield isn’t in the pews, the seminaries, or the conference rooms. It’s online—messy, chaotic, and full of people searching for meaning. So, let’s stop wasting time trying to convince the skeptics and instead show them what God can do.

Actions speak louder than words, and our work in digital missions is proof enough. Lives are being transformed, and the Gospel is spreading in ways that would’ve been impossible just a few decades ago. Let’s keep the focus where it belongs—on the mission.

A rebel’s guide to digital missions

There’s no cookie-cutter formula for digital missions. Forget the "four easy steps" to copy and paste. We have a framework, a foundation you can build on and adapt to your unique mission. It’s called the Digital Missionary Framework: Connect, Community, Equip, and Mobilize—and it’s your playbook for shaking up the digital world.

Connect

First, you have to make contact. Go where the people are—on social media, gaming lobbies, and VR spaces. Show up authentically. Connection is about being honest, present, and approachable. Don’t bring answers right away—bring curiosity, come in ready to listen, learn, and care. Build trust by being authentically you, and watch as doors begin to open.

Community

Connection is just the beginning. The next step is to build a community where people can belong before they believe. This isn’t about creating a fan club; it’s about fostering real relationships. Host an asynchronous Bible study on Discord, make friends in a Facebook group, or share Jesus while playing games like Final Fantasy. We see digital evangelism and discipleship happen best in community. Make people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Equip

Once people are part of the community, it’s time to equip them. Teach the Gospel in ways that connect to their world. Give tools, resources, and confidence so they can share their faith boldly. Don’t spoon-feed—empower them to own their spiritual growth and multiply the impact.

Mobilize

Finally, it’s go-time. Mobilize your people to take action. Whether starting ministry on Twitch, creating content for Youtube, or hosting prayer in VR, send them out as change-makers. The revolution begins when the equipped begin equipping others.

Contextualization: the digital missionary's secret weapon

One size does not fit all in digital missions. Contextualization is everything. What works on Twitch might flop on Facebook, and VR needs its own strategy. Your mission? Understand your audience, figure out what resonates, and tailor your approach.

Don’t try to reach everyone—it’s the fastest way to reach no one. Narrow your focus. Define your niche and speak directly to the people God has equipped you to reach. That’s where transformation starts.

Rethinking the church: small but mighty

Let’s flip the script. What’s better: a million-person megachurch or 100,000 churches of ten? Smaller, decentralized communities create deeper relationships and real discipleship. They’re agile, adaptable, and perfect for the digital age.

This isn’t about tearing down traditional churches—it’s about creating something new for those left unreached by conventional methods. Be bold, try something different, and trust God to work through it.

A global rebellion of digital missionaries

theChurch.digital isn’t just equipping digital missionaries—it’s igniting a global movement. Networks of rebels are rising, bringing the Gospel to every corner of the digital world. This is bigger than any one person or organization—it’s about transforming how people encounter Jesus, one connection at a time.
