Digital Discipleship: Bridging the Gap Between Faith and Technology

Barbara Carneiro • November 26, 2024

Is digital discipleship as real as in-person discipleship?

The answer is a resounding yes! As long as we’re connecting with real people and addressing their genuine needs for Jesus, we are engaging in authentic discipleship. Let’s dig into why digital discipleship matters and see how we can effectively bring the message of hope into the digital realm.

Understanding Digital Discipleship

Discipleship often brings to mind in-person gatherings, like church groups or events. These matter of course but we can’t ignore online spaces.

Whether it’s through Facebook groups, WhatsApp chats, or other digital platforms, these spaces are teeming with opportunities to share the gospel and make disciples.

The gospel has no boundaries—neither should we. The reality is that many of us are already engaging in various online environments.

As we navigate our digital lives, we encounter people who are eager for connection, understanding, and spiritual guidance. This is where digital discipleship comes into play, allowing us to meet people where they are.

Bringing Discipleship to Digital Spaces

Instead of asking whether digital discipleship is valid, let’s flip the script. Why wouldn’t we bring discipleship to the channels we already frequent? People are worth our time, whether we meet them in person or online.

The mission is to share the good news, answer questions, and engage in deeper conversations with those who are open to it.

I remember a time when I was new in my faith and wanted to share the good news. I often felt unsure and hesitant.

To practice, I would engage with telemarketers who called me. It was fascinating to see how easy it was to talk about my faith when there was no ongoing relationship.

This taught me that digital spaces can create unique opportunities for fearless, intentional connection.

The Power of Digital Connections

Digital discipleship isn’t a plan B; it’s a powerful tool to reach those outside traditional church circles.

For many, the online world is their only connection point. If we’re not showing up, we’re leaving them behind. It’s time to engage and be present where they are.

By embracing digital discipleship, we can create meaningful relationships and guide others in their journey towards Christ. These interactions aren’t less meaningful—they’re fertile ground to plant seeds of faith and watch them grow.

Embracing the Journey Together

As we embark on this journey of digital discipleship, let’s remember that it’s about the people. Each interaction holds the potential to impact a life.

Every comment, every conversation, every post is a chance to share the love of Jesus. Let’s engage with intention, knowing the potential to change lives is right at our fingertips.

If we live online, then our mission lives online too. The call is clear: share Jesus where people need Him most. Let’s embrace this responsibility boldly and unapologetically.
