0

Wanting to plant a church? In this mid/post-COVID culture we live in, there are many complications when it comes to doing physical ministry, much less starting physical ministry from scratch. At this point, every church plant needs to embrace “Phygital” in their church. How can your church plant be Phygital? Many different paths here to integrate digital into your church’s strategy. Let’s explore some options here, and give church planters some practical next steps, here on the BETA Show.

NOTES

  • Define Phygital (TM) Church: Strengths of Physical, Strengths of Digital
    • Easier to see Phygital in established churches (with more resources). Harder to make this happen in church plants. ("Not so easy.")
  • Step 1: Focus on Digital Communications
    • Digital Communication is crucial! What good is vision if not communicated effectively?
    • Digital Communications: Social Media, website, email, video, marketing, calendar planning
    • Planter/Lead Pastor does not need to be involved in all areas. Trust someone on your team spiritually to the place they can lead in digital communications for your church.
    • Don't be afraid to experiment - better to let your volunteers ask forgiveness than permission
  • Disclaimer: Step 2 and Step 3 can be swapped in order, dependent on the strategy of the church plant... are you launching your church first physically or digitally?
  • Step 2: (If physical first) Engage people in Digital Community to invite to your Physical Church Community
    • "Regionally-based" Facebook groups or hashtags. Engage in digital communities meeting people, building relationships, and connecting to physical church.
    • Other ideas:
      • Nextdoor app
      • Accounts from local restaurants
      • Hashtags from public community events like farmers markets, craft fairs, sporting events...
    • Heartbeat: Don't create new community! Instead interact with already existing digital community.
    • Recognize in this model discipleship only happens physically. Goal of engaging into groups is building relationships digitally to drive into that building for discipleship.
    • Is streaming your full 70-minute Physical Church service necessary? Think outside the box!
      • If goal is to get people to a building, 60 seconds is preferable over 60 minutes. Use hashtags.
      • Nothing wrong with using digital to hyper-focus on local. Go meet some people.
      • Create content where people will understand the why, the vision of your church, without watching 40 seconds of a 75-minute church service online.
      • Quick tip: Remember, online it's better to ask questions than make statements.
  • Step 3: Move Discipleship Digital
    • Why digital discipleship?
      • The multiplication potential of digital is vital to a healthy church plant's disciple-making DNA.
        • Digital offers that perfect mix of reaching and equipping that would be gasoline on the flame of a church plant's existing disciple-making culture.
      • Because digital community is a community worthy of a Digital Church.
        • All those communities you connected with in Step 2, what if instead of trying to drive those people to your physical building you decided to do church digitally?
